Hello Jonathan--my immense apologies for saying you were a graduate student; for some reason, I thought you were a PhD student at Cambridge, but can't recall now why I thought that, so my apologies again. I didn't mean to imply that you wrote the quotation which I *do* attribute to an anonymous reader at <a href="http://www.inthemedievalmiddle.com" rel="nofollow">"In The Middle,"</a> but since that isn't eminently clear, it's worth pointing it out here, as you do. And thanks, also, for your kind words regarding our efforts to enlarge the scope and ambit [and hopefully, the importance] of medieval studies.

That sounds really good, actually; attentive close readings of texts of any kind, as well as more imaginative farseeing <i>mises-en-contexte</i>, are after all the beginnings of almost everything anyone calling themselves a medievalist does. But, for the record since you've kindly linked to me, I'm not a graduate student (not for four years now) and I didn't, as you know but as isn't clear to the reader perhaps, write the words that you quote just after mentioning my name. Pedantry over, you're quite right about what needs to be done about the problems I've emphasised in that line, I think, and I'm inspired by your prodigious efforts. It's not just being self-important; it's actually making ourselves more important, or making our importance obvious. And as with any protest, which is what this is, right? it works best if you can amass a group. Or a group of groups... I need to add an extra line or two to my agenda. Thankyou.

Yes, there is a website for the project. It is linked via this blog or can be accessed directly via http://victorian.worc.ac.uk
Pdfs of plays can be located through the basic search engine (on the 'search' toolbar) or you can look at the 'playlist' itself. All the pdfs are linked to this page. Once a play is selected from the search you can search for the frequency of a word before downloading it. There is also a search facility on the catalogue page which gives an indication of all the plays Lacy published. We digitised 360 out of a possible 1500.
If you, or indeed anyone else, have any further questions about specific themes/plays, I can be contacted at Kate.Mattacks@uwe.ac.uk

I have a few questions:

(1) How can the digitised plays be accessed?
(2) Is there an actual Victorian Plays Project website (beyond this blog)?
(3) I am conducting research on Victorian plays on/in India and British Imperialism.

Any help available?

Thanks.

As far as Sorcha and I go, we don't have any plans to hold another symposium on the topic, but we are putting together a collection of essays. I would be interested too though to hear if any other academics have plans to hold seminars/conferences on the subject.

Best wishes,

Oh, the wrangled anguish of liberal guilt retroactively crediting 'oppressed' cultures the currency of our approval. By your logic, haven't we already done enough to these poor souls by destroying their cultures and perspectives only to, insult upon injury, cringingly reconstruct them? I can imagine proud academic archaeologists puzzling cultural debris into whole again, a Humpty-Dumpty redemption, gradually and cherishingly reassembling its face from shards of egg-shells and there emerging the furrow of a brow, a pair of indignant eyebrows, a snarled nose, a jutted chin and finally the face of the wrathful rerealization, hollow of soul, a Golem, cursing you all for disturbing his rest. Isn't it time to put all of this wrangled and overwrought guilt to bed already?

Jeanne Moskal of UNC Chapel Hill put me onto the CLO database when I mentioned I was about to start work on a chapter for my PhD on the Carlyles. What an astonishing resource it is! Wondering about Carlyle's attachment to ideas of silence, I was able in seconds to search - and found over 900 references in his letters to 'silence' or 'silent' and could track the development of his ideas with great precision. I'm glad to have the physical volumes to consult too - you don't want to curl up in an armchair with a good database. So thank you very much. This resource will revolutionise Carlyle scholarship.

It's not that the conceit is particularly unusual, but that Silverman's use of it is particularly good.

Firstly, it's not just a metaphor here: Silverman concretely describes the architecture of Mather's house, especially the library, which was one of the greatest private libraries of colonial America, and for colonial bibliophiles, the description is like catnip. Also, Silverman's placement of Mather embodied, as he moves through the divided spaces of the house, gives us access to the physical manifestations of Mather's mind and emotions.

Sure, house is to head, ala "House of Usher"; attic is to mind, ala the Custom House; but that's not what we get out of Silverman's bio.

dude. i know it's been awhile since you made this post but i have to say...from your description of silverman's book, you could take out the words "cotton mather" and insert about a thousand other famous writers and you could make the same argument. nathaniel hawthorne, emily dickinson, charlotte perkins gilman, samuel pepys, etc. what's so original about this book?

Dolan's book sounds like a much-needed consideration on tensions between concepts of hierarchical marriage and companionate marriage. Does anyone know if a table of contents is available online? I've been unable to locate one.

Brilliant event, like you mentioned it was somewhat light on female representation but it did attract a lot of international participants speaking on a wide range of topics so it gets plus points for that.
